Best Fabrics for Outdoor Layering (And Why Cotton Fails)
The best outdoor layering fabrics share one property depending on the layer: base layers need to wick moisture, mid layers need to trap air without holding water, and shells need to block wind and water while still letting vapor escape — and cotton fails at nearly all three, which is why it’s the one fabric outdoor guides consistently warn against.
Base layer fabrics
Merino wool wicks moisture, resists odor, and insulates even when slightly damp — the most forgiving base layer fabric, at a higher price point. Synthetic wicking fabrics (polyester, nylon blends) perform similarly for moisture management at a lower cost, though they hold odor more over multi-day trips. Both outperform cotton by a wide margin for this specific job.
Mid layer fabrics
Fleece is affordable, dries fast, and insulates reasonably well even damp — a solid default mid layer. Synthetic insulation (like polyester fill jackets) keeps insulating even if it gets wet, making it more forgiving than down in unpredictable weather. Down offers the best warmth-to-weight ratio but loses almost all insulating power when wet, so it’s a better choice for cold, dry conditions than damp or rainy ones.
Shell fabrics
Waterproof-breathable membranes (the fabric behind most “technical” rain jackets) block water while venting some internal moisture — better for sustained rain. Wind-resistant, non-waterproof shells breathe more and pack smaller — better for wind and light weather where sustained rain isn’t the main risk. Neither is strictly “better”; they solve different problems.
Why cotton fails specifically
Cotton fibers absorb water rather than moving it along, so a cotton layer holds onto sweat or rain and stays wet for hours. Wet cotton against your skin pulls heat away from your body significantly faster than dry fabric — fine on a warm, dry day, and genuinely risky in cold or wet conditions, where it’s a documented contributor to hypothermia even at temperatures well above freezing.
A simple fabric rule
If a layer’s job is to be worn directly against your skin or to keep you warm when wet, avoid cotton for it. For outer layers where waterproofing is doing the work (rather than the fabric’s inherent properties), the rule matters less.
